Indology V - Mahabharata I
Archaeo-astronomy of the Mahabharata

This article summarizes the internal evidence in the Mahabharata which clearly establishes the historicity of the MBH and also pinpoints its timeframe to the band between 1493 and 1443 BCE. The evidence described in this article correlates the archaeological finds (drying up of the Sarasvati River) with the internal astronomical evidence (3 solar eclipses and polestar and planetary movements) in the texts.

The common misperception that the MBH is dated to 3100 BCE (as often stated in the works of Nahari Achar and/or others such as Srinivasa Raghavan) is disproven and shown that the astronomical evidence normally used to substantiate this timeframe (3102-3067) is incorrect and not supported by any of our scriptures or texts – MBH (3 layers of the text), Skanda Purana, and Shatapatha Brahmana.  Although Prof. Iyengar doesn't review the archaeological finds at MBH cities (such as Indraprastha, Hastinapura, Ahichhatra /Panchala or Dvaraka), or the dynastic or rishi/priest chronologies at all, those bodies of data also point to this same timeframe of roughly 15th century BCE for the MBH Epic.
